Massachusetts State Police Recruit Dies After Training Incident

 

Enrique Delgado-Garcia, a 25-year-old Massachusetts state police recruit, tragically passed away following a medical emergency during a defensive tactics training exercise. The incident occurred during a routine boxing drill at the police academy in New Braintree, according to a report from WBZ Boston. Delgado-Garcia was knocked unconscious for nearly 10 minutes after being struck in the head, less than a month before his expected graduation.

The recruit was rushed to a hospital after becoming unresponsive during the training, but he died the following day, as confirmed by Massachusetts State Police spokesperson Tim McGuirk. Despite the immediate response from the academy's medical team, Delgado-Garcia’s injuries proved fatal.

His mother, Sandra Garcia, expressed her grief and confusion over the severity of her son’s injuries. Speaking to reporters from NBC10 Boston and Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra, she questioned why the training was so intense, stating that her son had sustained a brain injury, fractured teeth, and a neck injury.

In the final hours of his life, Delgado-Garcia was officially sworn in as a Massachusetts state trooper in a bilingual ceremony attended by family, friends, and classmates. He was posthumously honored with his trooper badge.

The incident is under investigation by the Worcester County District Attorney’s office, and Delgado-Garcia’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office for further examination. Delgado-Garcia had previously worked as a victim witness advocate with the district attorney's office.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her sorrow over Delgado-Garcia's death, describing him as a compassionate and dedicated recruit. State police officials have committed to supporting his family and fellow recruits through this difficult time.
