Nigerians have voiced diverse opinions on social media following the unveiling of the OneNigeria/UnityFabric by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The fabric, introduced as a symbol of national unity, was revealed during a ceremony at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Monday, September 16.
Senator Tinubu shared that the idea for the national fabric came from her visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she observed a similar initiative. She announced that the OneNigeria/UnityFabric will be worn nationwide to mark Nigeria's Independence Day on October 1, 2024.
The First Lady highlighted that the fabric would be mass-produced by local manufacturers. This, she said, aims to support local textile industries, generate employment, and strengthen the economy.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions on social media. Supporters have praised the initiative as a step towards fostering national unity and boosting local industries. However, critics argue that the timing of the project is problematic given the current economic challenges in Nigeria. Many Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and rising living costs, leading some to question the priority of this new initiative amidst pressing social issues.
