The National Examination Council (NECO) has released the results for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) for internal candidates. According to NECO’s Registrar, Prof. Dantana Wushishi, 828,284 candidates, representing 60.55% of those who sat for the exams, passed with five credits, including Mathematics and English Language.
Speaking at the Council's headquarters in Minna, Niger State, Wushishi also revealed that 1,147,597 candidates, or 83.90%, achieved five credits or more, regardless of English or Mathematics. Out of the 1,376,423 candidates who registered, 1,367,736 took the exams. This included 702,112 male and 665,624 female candidates.
In addressing exam malpractice, Wushishi noted a 30.1% reduction in cheating incidents, with 8,437 cases recorded in 2024 compared to 12,030 in 2023. He also highlighted that 2,267 candidates with special needs participated, including those with hearing impairments, visual impairments, albinism, autism, and low vision.
The NECO chief reported that 40 schools across 17 states were involved in mass cheating, and 21 supervisors across 12 states faced blacklisting for various infractions, including aiding malpractice and negligence. One school in Ekiti State was recommended for de-recognition due to mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject.
In terms of state performance, Abia State led the rankings with 83.40% of its candidates achieving five credits, including Mathematics and English. Meanwhile, Katsina State had the lowest performance, with only 42.00% of candidates scoring five credits, placing it just above Kano State, which recorded 44.42%.
