President Bola Tinubu will not be attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York this year. According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the event.
The statement explained that President Tinubu, who recently returned from trips to China and the United Kingdom, has chosen to focus on addressing domestic challenges, particularly in the aftermath of severe flooding in Nigeria. The statement read, “President Tinubu wants to focus on domestic issues and address some of the country’s challenges, especially after the recent devastating flooding."
Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the General Assembly and participate in key side events and bilateral meetings. The high-level debate of UNGA 79, which runs from September 24 to September 28, 2024, will focus on the theme, "Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations."
