The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has disbursed a total of N15.6 billion to 5,225 family members and next of kin of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty between 2023 and 2024. This was disclosed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, during a cheque presentation ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday.
IGP Egbetokun explained that the payments cover outstanding insurance benefits from 2018 to 2024. Specifically, N9.85 billion was paid to 3,077 families between July 2023 and June 2024. In addition, cheques totaling N5.75 billion were presented to more families of deceased officers during the ceremony.
He highlighted that Tuesday's presentation represents the largest single disbursement in the history of the police force, emphasizing the commitment to supporting the families of fallen officers. According to him, although the financial support cannot replace their loved ones, it aims to ease the burden and provide some relief as they face future challenges.
The payments are part of the insurance policies for the years 2018-2019, 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024, ensuring that the families of officers who sacrificed their lives for Nigeria are adequately compensated.
