Hajiya Fatima, Deputy Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, has raised concerns over the increasing involvement of women in drug addiction, calling the trend both alarming and troubling. She urged women to avoid self-medication and seek professional help when needed.
Speaking at a one-day sensitization workshop organized by the Zamfara State Substance Control and Human Trafficking Agency (SCHTA) in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), Fatima stressed the urgent need to address the growing issue of drug abuse among women. The event, attended by over 200 stakeholders from across the state, aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse.
Pharmacist Mukhtar and other speakers at the workshop highlighted the risks of self-medication and improper use of drugs. They cautioned against the growing trend of people taking medication without professional guidance, noting the harmful effects it can have on individuals and society.
In his remarks, Hon. Adamu Gummi, Deputy Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, assured attendees that the House would work to pass legislation empowering the agency to combat drug abuse and create a drug-free society.
Pharmacist Ishaq Ibrahim Anka, Executive Secretary of SCHTA, revealed that efforts were underway to extend the sensitization campaign to the state's 17 emirates and 447 wards, as well as institutions of higher learning, to further educate people on the dangers of drug abuse.
