Nsikak Akpan Breaks World Record for Longest Marathon Lecture

Nsikak Akpan, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Foreign Links Campus, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has broken the world record for the longest marathon lecture. Akpan surpassed the previous record of 139 hours, 52 minutes, and 42 seconds, held by Indian professor Arvind Mishra, when he reached 142 hours on Sunday morning.

Despite surpassing the record, Akpan is determined to continue his lecture until he hits 150 hours. Throughout his marathon lecture, he addressed various environmental and public health issues, urging governments to enforce laws protecting both.

One of Akpan’s key messages was the need to enforce laws against smoking in public, stating, "Smoking in public harms not only the smoker but also those nearby. Secondary smokers are exposed to the same health risks."

He also criticized the Osun State government for concreting road medians, calling it a shift from "green to black." Akpan explained that plants on medians help absorb harmful substances like carbon monoxide and heavy metals, which are released by vehicles. Removing these plants, he said, increases the risk of diseases spreading due to the release of toxins into the atmosphere.

Akpan’s attempt to break the Guinness World Record began on September 23, 2024, covering topics on ecology and environmental science. His marathon lecture has sparked discussions about environmental policies and public health in Nigeria.
