Professor John Okeniyi, Chief Medical Director of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced a new initiative to tackle sexual harassment within the institution. During a press conference marking his first year in office, Professor Okeniyi revealed plans to remove beds from various hospital offices.
The move aims to address concerns that the presence of beds in these spaces could lead to inappropriate behavior and sexual advances. Professor Okeniyi stated, "Beds in offices could provoke sexual harassment, and it is essential to remove them to maintain a professional environment."
Additionally, the hospital has implemented a strict anti-sexual harassment policy. Professor Okeniyi emphasized that ignorance of the policy will no longer be an excuse for misconduct. He warned that those found guilty of sexual harassment would face serious consequences, including public exposure and legal action.
"We have made it clear that sexual harassment will not be tolerated," Okeniyi said. "We will impose punishments and ensure that violators are held accountable. There will be a wall of shame on the Internet for those who fail to comply."
To further support victims, the hospital has empowered employees to report harassment without fear of retaliation. "We are committed to listening and taking action against any form of harassment," Okeniyi added.
The changes are part of a broader effort to ensure a safe and respectful work environment at OAUTH.
