Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has spoken out against former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance for promoting unfounded racist claims regarding Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. In a guest essay published in the New York Times on Friday, DeWine expressed disappointment that Springfield has become a center of hostility surrounding immigration policy.
DeWine, a supporter of both Trump and Vance, noted that their comments are damaging to the community and to legal immigrants living there. He said, “This rhetoric hurts the city and its people,” while also acknowledging that Trump and Vance raise valid concerns about the Biden administration’s border control policies. However, he argued that their attacks on Haitian immigrants overshadow important discussions about immigration reform.
The governor's remarks have received mixed responses from Ohio Democrats. State Representative Allison Russo praised DeWine for his “fair and very thoughtful op-ed” regarding the hardworking Haitian immigrants in Springfield. Conversely, State Senate Leader Nickie Antonio expressed disappointment that DeWine continues to support Trump and Vance, saying they are perpetuating hate and discrimination against legal immigrants.
In light of recent tensions, Trump announced plans to visit Springfield in the coming weeks. Both DeWine and Springfield Mayor Rob Rue, also a Republican, have voiced concerns about security for such a visit, emphasizing the need for community peace.
Following the spread of false rumors, schools in Springfield have faced more than 30 bomb threats, leading to temporary closures and heightened security measures. DeWine has since deployed the Ohio State Highway Patrol to ensure public safety, stating that the rumors lack any factual basis.
