The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has laid out specific conditions for signing the peace accord ahead of the upcoming Edo governorship election on September 21, 2024. This follows the party’s refusal to sign the agreement during a peace meeting chaired by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), citing concerns about fairness and the arrest of party members.
At a press conference in Benin City, the PDP, represented by its state chairman Tony Aziegbemi, demanded the redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Onuoha Anugbum, and the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Nemi Iwo. Aziegbemi alleged that the REC is a known associate of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and had served under Wike’s administration in Rivers State, raising concerns about potential bias.
The PDP also called for the immediate release of party members arrested by the police, stressing that any criminal charges should be handled through the courts. Aziegbemi emphasized that the current security environment in Edo State does not support a free and fair election.
The party assured that once these conditions are met, it will sign the peace accord and participate in the election in good faith, confident in the democratic will of the Edo people.
