The Elders Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has publicly apologized to former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for the ongoing dispute between him and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, whom they referred to as their "son."
Led by Boma Iyaye, Executive Director of Finance at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the elders offered their apology to Wike during an event organized by the Rivers State Ijaw Peoples Congress in Port Harcourt on September 28.
Iyaye expressed regret over what he described as the "embarrassment and public disrespect" Wike has faced from Fubara. He emphasized that the actions of the current governor do not align with the values of the Ijaw people, who do not repay kindness with ill treatment.
"On behalf of our people, we are apologizing for the actions of our son. We are sorry because it is not in our culture to return evil for good. You have done so much for us, and we remain grateful," Iyaye said. He urged Wike not to distance himself from the Ijaw community, reminding him that he played a pivotal role in helping the Ijaw people achieve the governorship position in Rivers State for the first time.
The Chairman of the Elders Forum, Ferdinand Anabraba, also criticized the Fubara administration, making it clear that the Ijaw people do not support the current political tensions. He praised Wike for his leadership and political acumen, referring to him as a key figure in Nigeria’s contemporary politics.
"The issues we are witnessing in Rivers State are the result of individual actions, not the collective view of the Ijaw people. We see you, Wike, as the light of Rivers State and one of the most celebrated Ijaw politicians with national recognition," Anabraba added.
This apology highlights the elders' efforts to mend the growing rift between Wike and Fubara, while reaffirming Wike’s importance to the Ijaw community and his contributions to their political achievements.
