Sean 'Diddy' Combs, the renowned music mogul, has reportedly been placed on suicide watch as he awaits trial on serious charges. The 54-year-old was arrested earlier this week at a hotel in New York and faces allegations of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution.
Combs is currently held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center after pleading not guilty to the charges. He has been denied bail twice.
Sources told PEOPLE that the decision to place him on suicide watch is a preventative measure, as he is reportedly in shock and his mental state is unclear. The U.S. Department of Justice defines suicide watch as a precautionary measure that requires frequent observation of inmates deemed at risk of self-harm.
During the court proceedings, Combs’ legal team argued for his release while awaiting trial, proposing a $50 million bond with strict conditions, including electronic monitoring, weekly drug tests, a visitor log, surrendering his passport, and prohibiting contact with women. However, the judge denied this request, citing concerns about potential obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
Judge Andrew Carter expressed that he was particularly worried that releasing Combs could influence the ongoing case. During the arraignment, Combs’ lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, mentioned that Combs is receiving treatment and therapy, although he did not disclose specific details due to confidentiality.
When asked to enter a plea, Combs simply stated, "Not guilty." If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and could potentially receive a life sentence.
