Senate Confirms Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as Chief Justice of Nigeria

The Senate has officially confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). She has been serving in an acting role since August, following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

Justice Kekere-Ekun arrived at the Senate Chamber at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, September 25, accompanied by other Justices from the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Her confirmation followed a request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which was presented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a session on September 24.

President Tinubu's nomination aligns with section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which allows the President to appoint the CJN based on recommendations from the National Judicial Commission (NJC). In his letter, he stated, “I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun CON for confirmation as CJN.”

After the Senate President read the letter, the nomination was sent to the committee of the whole for review. Following a thorough interview and screening process, the Senate confirmed her as CJN.

During her interview, Justice Kekere-Ekun highlighted her commitment to using technology to improve the speed of justice delivery in Nigeria. She also promised that corrupt individuals and criminals would not find refuge in the system and emphasized the importance of maintaining the judiciary's independence from outside influences.
