Shooter Testifies in Young Dolph's Murder Case, Implicates Others in Plot

Cornelius Smith, one of the individuals involved in the 2021 murder of Memphis rapper Young Dolph, took the stand this week and provided significant details about the crime. Smith, who has already pleaded guilty to the murder, testified that the plot to kill the rapper was orchestrated by Hernandez "Quett" Govan, with financial backing from Anthony "Big Jook" Mims, the brother of rapper Yo Gotti.

According to Smith's testimony, Govan organized the hit, and Big Jook offered $100,000 to have it carried out. Smith and Justin Johnson, who was also involved in the shooting, were promised $40,000 each, while Govan was supposed to receive $20,000. However, Smith revealed that he only received $800, but Big Jook later covered $50,000 in legal fees after his arrest.

Smith admitted that the murder took place on the same day as his daughter's birthday. When asked why he proceeded with the crime, Smith explained that he needed the money to make his daughter's day special. "I was just trying to make it right for her," he said. "I didn’t have any money, so I was trying to get some that day to make sure my baby girl had a beautiful birthday."

Initially, Smith and Johnson planned to carry out the murder during Young Dolph’s annual Thanksgiving turkey drive. However, after spotting the rapper’s distinctive camouflage-wrapped Corvette, they decided to follow him to the parking lot of Makeda's Homemade Butter Cookies, where they allegedly shot Dolph 22 times.

Smith stated that he decided to come forward with the truth due to feelings of guilt following his arrest. He explained that he had been struggling with drug use after the death of his 9-year-old son in 2020 but wanted to clear his conscience. "I’m going to jail anyway," Smith said. "I might as well be honest. Why play with these folks? They already know."

Smith's testimony also revealed that Big Jook, who financed the murder, was killed in January 2024.
