ASUU Issues 14-Day Strike Ultimatum to Federal Government Over Unresolved Issues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Nigerian Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to resolve long-standing issues dating back to 2009. This warning, issued on Wednesday, September 25, by ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke, highlights the union's frustration with the government's failure to meet key demands.

ASUU is urging the government to finalize the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, based on the recommendations of the Nimi Briggs Committee in 2021. Additionally, the union is demanding the release of salaries that were withheld due to the 2022 strike action. ASUU expressed disappointment with what it describes as the government's lack of commitment and continuous delays in addressing these issues, warning that these actions are creating a crisis within the public university system.

In its statement, ASUU gave the government an additional 14 days, starting from Monday, September 23, 2024, to address all outstanding concerns. The union made it clear that any disruption to academic activities that follows will be the responsibility of the government for failing to resolve the ongoing disputes.

Among other demands, ASUU is calling for the release of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct roles affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), as well as the payment of outstanding third-party deductions such as check-off dues and cooperative contributions.

ASUU warned that failure to address these issues within the given period may lead to industrial action.
