Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Alliance (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has questioned the fitness of President Bola Tinubu to govern Nigeria. In a post shared on his official X account on Thursday, Sowore claimed that Tinubu's health is deteriorating, making him incapable of handling the country's affairs effectively.
Sowore's remarks came in response to a statement from the presidency, which announced that Tinubu would not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York. Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will represent Nigeria at the event.
In his tweet, Sowore stated, "Tinubu will skip #UNGA; after the Chinese trip and London medicals, this man can't move any more! @officialABAT is unfit and unwell. Nigeria is not going to make progress with these types."
Earlier reports confirmed that Tinubu, who had recently returned from trips to China and the UK, opted out of attending UNGA to focus on pressing domestic issues, particularly the aftermath of severe flooding in parts of Nigeria.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, explained that Tinubu directed Vice President Shettima to lead Nigeria's delegation to the UN meeting. Shettima will present Nigeria's national statement and participate in bilateral discussions and other important side events during the assembly, which is scheduled to take place from September 24 to 28, 2024.
