Former U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken out about the recent assassination attempt on his life and shared details of a phone call he received from President Joe Biden afterward.
On Sunday, September 15, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested in connection with the attempt on Trump’s life while he was playing golf at his West Palm Beach, Florida course. This marked the second assassination attempt targeting the former president, the first occurring at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in July.
Trump, reacting to the incident, said, "Perhaps it's God's will that there were two attempts on my life. Maybe God wants me to be president again to save this country." He also revealed that President Biden called him on Monday evening to check on his well-being and ask if Trump had any suggestions for his security detail.
"He called to make sure I was okay and asked if I had any suggestions," Trump noted, adding that he mentioned the need for more security at his events, which attract large crowds. "We have 50, 60,000 people showing up, and other people don’t get that."
During a conversation on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday night, Trump suggested that the "radical left" could be behind both assassination attempts. "A lot of people believe Democrats, with their rhetoric about threats to democracy, are encouraging this type of violence," he said.
Reflecting on the Sunday incident, Trump praised the quick response of the Secret Service. He recounted how gunshots were fired while he was on the fifth hole of his golf course, and his security detail immediately acted to protect him. "The Secret Service did an excellent job," Trump said. "They saw the barrel of an AK-47, started shooting at it, and ran toward the target. It was quite something, but it worked out well."
Trump shared a lighter moment, joking that he would have liked to finish his golf round but had to prioritize his safety. "I would have loved to sink that last putt, but we decided, let's get out of here."
He concluded by praising law enforcement for their swift and effective handling of the situation, saying, "Secret Service, the sheriff’s office, and all law enforcement did a great job."
The former president remains unharmed, and Routh is in custody. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
