On Friday, Donald Trump vowed to direct the Justice Department to bring criminal charges against Google if he is re-elected, claiming the company is unfairly displaying negative news about him while promoting favorable coverage of his opponent, Kamala Harris.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Google of manipulating search results, saying, "It has been determined that Google has illegally used a system of only revealing bad stories about Donald J. Trump... while, at the same time, only revealing good stories about Kamala Harris."
He further stated, "This is illegal, and hopefully, the Justice Department will prosecute them for this election interference. If not, I will push for their prosecution when I win the election."
Trump did not provide specific examples of the alleged bias or address the possibility that more negative stories about his campaign may have surfaced compared to Harris's. Google has denied manipulating search results for political gain, stating that both campaign websites consistently appear at the top of relevant searches.
For years, conservatives have expressed concerns about alleged bias in Google’s search results favoring Democrats. The Media Research Center, a conservative watchdog group, has previously claimed that Google’s algorithms benefit Democratic candidates.
The Trump campaign has also criticized Harris's campaign for using Google’s "sponsored" search feature to promote positive stories about her, including headlines rewritten by the campaign.
This is not the first time Trump has threatened to use his presidential powers against perceived enemies. Earlier this month, he vowed to seek criminal charges against lawyers, donors, and others he believes were involved in election fraud against him.
At a recent rally in Michigan, Trump also called for an investigation into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband over stock sales linked to a Justice Department lawsuit against Visa.
Trump's threats highlight his ongoing grievances about the media and tech companies as he continues his 2024 presidential campaign.
