The Super Eagles have safely arrived at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano State after a distressing experience in Libya, where they were stranded for over 13 hours ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The Nigerian national team, along with officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), faced an unexpected delay after their flight, which was supposed to land in Benghazi, was diverted to Al Abraq Airport, located two hours away from their destination. Upon arrival, the team was confined to the airport without access to basic necessities such as food, water, or a place to rest.
Photos of the players sleeping on benches inside the airport went viral, leading to widespread outrage from Nigerian authorities and football fans alike. The situation prompted the team to declare they would not play in Libya, with reports indicating that their plane was being refueled for their return journey to Nigeria.
After enduring the ordeal, the Super Eagles have now landed back in Nigeria. Team captain William Troost-Ekong shared the news on Instagram, while forward Victor Boniface confirmed the team's arrival via his X (formerly Twitter) account, following the clearance for their flight to take off.
The team’s return comes ahead of their next challenge, as they prepare to refocus on their AFCON qualifying campaign.
