The United Nations has raised alarms over the escalating violence between Israel and Iran's allies, Hezbollah and Hamas, warning that it could lead to a devastating regional conflict. This follows an Israeli airstrike in Beirut that killed at least 14 people, including a senior Hezbollah leader, and wounded 66 others.
The airstrike targeted Ibrahim Aqil, a key figure in Hezbollah’s military council, who was also wanted by the US for his alleged role in the 1983 bombing of the US embassy in Beirut. Israel confirmed that Aqil, leader of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan special forces, was killed alongside 10 other commanders.
This attack is part of a series of strikes in Lebanon, following a major incident where thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members exploded, resulting in significant casualties. UN political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo emphasized the need for diplomacy to prevent further escalation, stating that the situation could lead to a conflict much worse than what has already occurred.
In response to the airstrikes, Hezbollah launched over 100 rockets at northern Israel, hitting military targets. Meanwhile, medical facilities in Lebanon are overwhelmed with casualties, as doctors report dire conditions and a surge in patients with severe injuries.
Lebanese health officials are bracing for further conflict, with the health sector already stretched due to ongoing crises. The UK Foreign Secretary has advised British nationals to evacuate Lebanon as tensions rise and the situation continues to deteriorate.
