Bellarmine Chatunga, son of the late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, is facing arrest after failing to appear in court where he is facing two criminal charges. Beitbridge Magistrate Vavariro Gavi issued the warrant after Chatunga missed his court date regarding a violent altercation that occurred on August 31, 2024.
Chatunga’s lawyer, Muchiwande Sithole of F Chauke and Associates, informed the court that his client was unable to attend the hearing due to undergoing surgery in Harare. Last month, Beitbridge Resident Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba had granted Chatunga free bail and set a provisional trial date.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Chatunga faces two charges under the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act): disorderly conduct and possession of a prohibited knife.
The charges stem from an incident on August 31, 2024, when Chatunga’s black Range Rover was stopped at a police roadblock in Beitbridge. The vehicle was driven by a South African national, Irvin Molokoza. When police requested Molokoza’s passport and vehicle registration, Chatunga reportedly became agitated and intervened.
The NPA reported that Chatunga allegedly confronted the officer, saying, "What are you doing? You are delaying me for the fourth time. I am rushing to a wedding in Harare, check my passport. Don’t you know who I am?" During the altercation, a small brown knife reportedly fell from his jacket, leading to his arrest.
Authorities are now actively searching for Chatunga following the warrant for his arrest. The case is ongoing.
