Ahmed Shehu, Chairman of the CSOs for the Lake-Chad Basin, described the situation as critical. He explained that the flooding has overwhelmed key areas, including the Maiduguri bypass bridge and Zoo Road, and is now spreading towards the College of Health Technology and Damboa Road.
"The situation is dire," Shehu stated. "The water flooded the zoo at midnight, and while we don’t know the exact condition of the animals, it's certain they have fled, posing a threat to the community. The same route taken by displaced people is now being used by the animals."
In addition to the zoo incident, Shehu highlighted that a Christian cemetery in Old GRA has been submerged, creating a potential public health risk. He urged the government to act swiftly to prevent further danger, including setting up barricades to protect citizens from the wild animals.
"This situation is beyond imagination and requires immediate emergency response from all stakeholders. It's also a time for prayers and support for the people of Maiduguri," Shehu added.
