Professional boxer Mylik Birdsong was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in South Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. in the Gramercy Park neighborhood, on the 1600 block of West 87th Street at Denker Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Birdsong, 31, was standing outside a residence when two suspects approached in a vehicle and opened fire. The assailants then exited the vehicle, chasing and continuing to shoot at him until he was fatally wounded. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by paramedics, but despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have not yet released a description of the suspects or the vehicle involved, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Birdsong’s identity was confirmed by TMZ, who reported that the rising boxer had been scheduled to fight again on October 26.
With a career record of 15-1-1, including 10 knockouts, Birdsong was a promising talent in the sport. His most recent victory came on March 23, when he won the vacant World Boxing Foundation international welterweight championship with a unanimous decision over Jerry Bradford.
The boxing community mourns the loss of the talented athlete as police continue their investigation into the fatal shooting.
