Investigation Discovery (ID) is set to kick off its third annual No Excuse for Abuse campaign with the release of a documentary titled Chris Brown: A History of Violence on October 27. The film will delve into the two-decade career of the American music star, focusing on his long history of legal issues, which began with his 2009 arrest for assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna.
Despite his undeniable musical talent, the documentary questions how Brown has managed to maintain his superstar status and dedicated fan base in light of his numerous allegations of violence and abuse. The teaser for the film points out, “Chris Brown is an amazing and talented musician, but let’s call a thing a thing. He’s an abuser of women. Consistently, unapologetically,” signaling a critical exploration of his alleged pattern of abuse, including accusations of intimate partner violence and sexual assault.
The documentary will also feature a new accuser whose identity will remain concealed, adding to the already troubling narrative surrounding the singer. After the premiere, The View co-host Sunny Hostin will lead a discussion with experts and advocates, focusing on raising awareness about intimate partner violence. Hostin, who has a personal connection to the issue, stated, “Domestic violence is a very close, personal issue to me... The more we know, the better we can help advocate for change as a society.”
The release of Chris Brown: A History of Violence comes at a time when fellow rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs is also facing serious allegations, including sex trafficking and racketeering. Combs is expected to be the subject of an ID docuseries scheduled for 2025.
The documentary will further explore how Brown’s abusive behavior is tied to a cycle of violence stemming from his childhood, with input from experts and survivors of abuse. The producers aim to highlight the psychological impact of abuse and its lasting effects on victims.
