Birmingham Man Found to Have Three Penises After Donating Body to Science

A 78-year-old man from Birmingham has been discovered to have three penises, making him only the second person ever recorded with this rare condition. The man, who donated his body to the University of Birmingham Medical School after his death, was revealed to have this extraordinary anatomy during a dissection by medical students.

Surprisingly, the man lived his entire life without knowing he had not one but three penises. According to medical experts, conditions like this are extremely rare, occurring in about one in every five or six million people. While there are over 100 documented cases of diphallia—having two penises—this is only the second known instance of triphallia, which involves three.

Upon examination, medical professionals found that only one of the three penises was functional. The other two were situated within the scrotal sac, which may explain why the man was unaware of his unusual condition. Initially, he appeared to have normal genitalia, but further dissection revealed "two small supernumerary penises."

The primary and secondary penises shared a urethra that traveled through the secondary penis before passing through the primary one. Researchers from the Journal of Medical Case Reports noted that these anatomical irregularities might not have been identified during the man's lifetime. They suggested he could have experienced functional issues related to his condition, including urinary tract infections, erectile dysfunction, or fertility challenges.

The only other recorded case of triphallia occurred in 2020 when a three-month-old baby was found to have a similar condition. Researchers speculated that polyphallia—having multiple penises—may be more common than previously understood. This remarkable discovery sheds light on the complexities of human anatomy and the various conditions that can arise during development.
