Italian referee Fabio Maresca, a long-time official in the Champions League, has reportedly been suspended from European matches following accusations that he threatened to kill a player. The incident occurred during a Kuwait Premier League match on Friday, where Kuwaiti player Khaled Al Murshed claimed that Maresca told him, "see you next time, I'll kill you."
However, there are conflicting reports. Another player suggested that Maresca simply said, "see you next time," without the additional threatening words, according to Corriere della Sera.
Following the allegations, Maresca was removed from his role as the fourth official for the Champions League match between PSV Eindhoven and Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Despite the controversy, Maresca has maintained that his comment was only a joke. As of now, it appears he will not face any formal punishment in Kuwait, where the accusation was made.
Maresca, 43, has been officiating in Italy's professional football leagues since 2011 and began handling European competition matches in 2018.
