In the lead-up to the 2024 U.S. elections, a network of social media bots, allegedly linked to China, is targeting several Republican lawmakers, including Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, according to research released by Microsoft on Wednesday. The bots are said to be focusing on influencing voters in Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee by spreading misinformation and denigrating prominent GOP figures.
The group responsible for the activity, known as Taizi Flood, is reportedly associated with China’s Ministry of Public Security. According to Microsoft, this network has amplified antisemitic messages, spread accusations of corruption, and boosted support for opposition candidates, particularly focusing on Representative Barry Moore of Alabama, Representative Michael McCaul of Texas, Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, and Rubio. These lawmakers have historically been vocal critics of China's policies.
The Chinese embassy in Washington denied any involvement, stating that China has no intention of interfering in U.S. elections and dismissing the allegations as baseless speculation.
Among the claims promoted by the bots were antisemitic attacks on Moore, accusations of financial misconduct against Rubio, and suggestions that Blackburn accepted funds from pharmaceutical companies. The network also pushed narratives accusing McCaul of insider trading.
In response, Moore noted that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is known for its antisemitic rhetoric and suggested that his pro-Israel stance made him a target. McCaul, meanwhile, said he took the targeting as a "badge of honor," given his strong stance against the CCP throughout his career.
Despite these efforts, Microsoft researchers indicated that the bot-driven campaign did not result in significant public engagement, although no specific metrics were provided on how widely the misinformation was viewed.
With Moore, McCaul, and Blackburn all up for re-election next month, the federal government is coordinating efforts to protect the election from foreign influence. However, no immediate comments were received from U.S. intelligence agencies regarding the matter. Senator Rubio, who is not due for re-election until 2028, serves as vice-chair of the Senate intelligence committee, making him a prominent figure in the ongoing scrutiny of foreign interference.
