Defence Headquarters Confirms Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s Medical Leave Abroad

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, is currently abroad for medical treatment while also on his annual leave. This was disclosed in a statement on Saturday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, who assured the public that there is no leadership vacuum in the Nigerian Army during Lagbaja’s absence.

The statement was issued following public concerns over Lagbaja's noticeable absence from recent military events, with speculations of potential leadership gaps. Addressing these concerns, Nwachukwu clarified, "There have been instances where service chiefs were absent for extended periods due to unforeseen circumstances, but claims of a leadership vacuum are entirely unfounded."

Nwachukwu emphasized that the Nigerian Army operates under a well-structured system, ensuring continuity of leadership during any absence. He explained that before taking his leave, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja made the necessary arrangements to maintain operational efficiency, including appointing Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalami Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), to temporarily oversee his duties.

The Army spokesperson further stated, "The Nigerian Army follows established protocols to handle situations like this, and all ongoing activities remain on track under the directives set by the COAS. The appropriate departmental chiefs are actively fulfilling their responsibilities."

In response to rumors circulating about confusion within the ranks, Nwachukwu urged the public to disregard such claims, reassuring that the Army's training, operations, and administrative functions continue smoothly. He also expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their concern and prayers for Lagbaja's health.

"The Army Headquarters extends its appreciation to well-meaning Nigerians for their genuine concern for Lt. Gen. Lagbaja and their continued prayers. The COPP(A) is effectively managing the Army's affairs in his absence, and everything remains under control," Nwachukwu concluded.
