The Nigerian Federal Government has condemned former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, for urging youth to protest the rising cost of living in the country. In a recent interview, Amaechi expressed his disappointment at the perceived lack of public outcry, particularly from young Nigerians, amid the nation's economic challenges. He stated that he had anticipated more visible demonstrations and protests from the youth.
“I expected more agitation, especially from the youth. I thought we would see protests in the streets, but it seems people are not expressing the kind of anger I expected,” said Amaechi, who previously served as the Governor of Rivers State.
In response, the government, through a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information, criticized Amaechi’s remarks as “unpatriotic” and “irresponsible.” The statement accused Amaechi of inciting unrest and exploiting the economic situation for personal political gain.
The statement, titled "Rotimi Amaechi Inciting Anarchy is Irresponsible and Unpatriotic," described Amaechi as a long-time beneficiary of state resources, having held high-ranking positions, including Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transport.
The Federal Government further accused Amaechi of hypocrisy, pointing out that despite his criticisms, he was part of the political elite that contributed to the nation's economic woes. The statement also suggested that Amaechi, alongside other opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, is frustrated by not being in power and is now attempting to stir public unrest.
The government emphasized that the current administration, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is implementing necessary reforms, which, although causing temporary economic discomfort, will yield long-term benefits for the nation. It urged Nigerians to remain patient and to dismiss Amaechi’s call for protests, labeling it a selfish and dangerous move.
The statement concluded by encouraging citizens to support the government's efforts to transform the economy, while dismissing Amaechi’s comments as politically motivated and unhelpful.
