Former Footballer Hwang Ui-jo Faces Prison for Illegally Filming Sexual Encounters

Former Championship footballer Hwang Ui-jo is facing a potential four-year prison sentence for illegally filming intimate encounters without consent, according to reports from French outlet L'Equipe.

Prosecutors in Seoul, South Korea, allege that Hwang secretly recorded sexual encounters with two partners on four separate occasions between June and September 2022. The case came to light after his sister-in-law reportedly posted the videos on social media.

Hwang subsequently sued his sister-in-law for blackmail, a case in which he was successful, leading to her receiving a three-year sentence. However, legal proceedings continued against Hwang for the illegal filming itself, which occurred without the consent of those involved.

Appearing in court on Wednesday, Hwang expressed remorse for his actions, saying, "I will not do anything wrong in the future and will do my best as a footballer. I sincerely apologise to the victims affected by my actions, and I am deeply sorry for the disappointment I have caused to all those who have cared and supported me."

Despite his apology, prosecutors have sought a four-year prison term, citing doubts about Hwang’s sincerity due to his earlier denials of the charges. One of the victims has refused to enter a plea bargain, requesting a severe sentence instead.

Due to the illegal nature of the recordings, details about the women involved have not been made public. Hwang's legal battle continues as the case unfolds in court.
