Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently shared a personal story about his unexpected battle with hearing loss, revealing that he unknowingly suffered from a 25 percent hearing impairment.
During a visit to the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman-Adamu, on Sunday, October 20, Obasanjo recounted an incident from his time abroad when he struggled to hear someone speaking to him. Initially brushing off the issue, he later consulted a medical professional who examined his ears and confirmed the loss of hearing capacity.
“After my result came out, I had to ask the man to also check on my Chief Security Officer then, but shockingly enough, he was more deaf than I was,” Obasanjo remarked.
This personal experience led to the establishment of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, which has collaborated with Starkey Hearing Foundation to provide ear treatment and hearing aids to thousands of Nigerians. Obasanjo announced an ambitious plan to distribute hearing aids to about 10,000 indigent individuals in the North-East region, starting with an initial 2,000 beneficiaries in Bauchi State. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for those affected by hearing impairments.
