A tragic incident occurred in Nibo, a community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday, where at least 16 people, primarily youths, were reportedly killed by gunmen. The attack took place during the Onwa Asaa traditional festival, a significant cultural celebration in the town.
Eyewitnesses reported that masked gunmen arrived in a black Lexus SUV and opened fire on the youths who were gathered at a local restaurant, enjoying food and drinks. Videos circulating online depicted the grim aftermath, showing several individuals lying lifeless on the ground.
As the chaos unfolded, festivalgoers scrambled for safety amid the sound of gunfire. “It felt like a war zone. The gunmen just stormed the place and started shooting everywhere. People were running for their lives, screaming and crying. It was absolute chaos,” recounted one witness.
The motive for the attack remains unknown, prompting community members to call for immediate action from local authorities to restore security and peace. One resident expressed frustration, stating, “We urge the government to take immediate action. We cannot continue to live in fear. We need peace and security in our community. What was supposed to be a joyful celebration has been marred by violence and bloodshed.”
The Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, describing it as “cult-related.” He noted that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has deployed an anti-crime police team to the area to restore order.
In a statement, SP Ikenga called on witnesses to come forward with information to aid in identifying the perpetrators. “The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash today, 20/10/2024, in Nibo, Awka South LG, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action. Preliminary reports of the incidents are still sketchy as the command calls on witnesses to volunteer information that will help to identify the perpetrators for possible arrest,” he stated.
