Hotel Collapse in Argentina Leaves One Dead and Several Trapped

A tragic incident occurred in Villa Gesell, Argentina, when a ten-storey hotel known as the Dubrovnik collapsed, resulting in one fatality and leaving multiple individuals trapped in the debris. The collapse took place in the early hours of Tuesday, October 29, as reported by local officials.

Rescue teams, including over 300 firefighters and police, quickly mobilized to search for survivors. They successfully rescued a woman from the rubble, while an 80-year-old man was confirmed dead. According to provincial security minister Javier Alonso, there were no guests in the hotel at the time of the collapse, but several workers were staying in another section of the building, which was originally constructed in 1986.

Concerns have arisen regarding unauthorized construction activities, as reports indicate that workers were operating at the site without municipal permits. Local officials noted that they had previously detected and halted unauthorized construction work within the building back in August.

Mayor Gustavo Barrera warned that the adjacent building may also be at risk of collapse. Following the incident, a prosecutor has initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the collapse. In a press release, Villa Gesell’s municipality stated that the hotel was undergoing renovations without the necessary permits. Furthermore, Mr. Alonso mentioned that the courts have ordered the arrest of four individuals linked to the incident. Rescue operations continue as authorities work tirelessly to locate any remaining survivors.
