Israeli Airstrikes Target Tyre as Hezbollah Confirms Death of Key Official

Israeli warplanes have struck multiple buildings in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre, resulting in large plumes of black smoke rising from the area. This attack comes as Hezbollah confirmed the death of Hashem Safieddine, a high-ranking official within the group, who was anticipated to succeed Hassan Nasrallah as its leader.

No casualties have been reported in Tyre, where the Israeli military had issued evacuation warnings prior to the strikes. However, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency reported that an Israeli airstrike in the nearby town of Maarakeh resulted in the deaths of three individuals. In response, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets into Israel, with two rockets triggering air raid sirens in Tel Aviv before being intercepted.

Hezbollah stated that Safieddine was killed in an earlier strike in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Safieddine, a prominent cleric within the party, led Hezbollah’s executive council and was expected to take over after the recent killing of Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike.

The current hostilities escalated after Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel on October 8, 2023, following Israel's military response to a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel. Since then, exchanges of fire have occurred almost daily, with Israeli air raids intensifying last month, resulting in significant losses among Hezbollah's leadership.

Tyre, a city known for its historical significance and cultural heritage, had largely avoided direct conflict until recently. The strikes on Wednesday targeted buildings located near several historical sites, including the UNESCO-listed hippodrome.

In the wake of the strikes, Israeli authorities urged residents to evacuate areas north of the Awali River, citing Hezbollah's presence in the region, although details were not provided. Mohamad Bazzi, an associate professor at New York University, criticized Israel's tactics, stating, “You can’t bomb your way to safety and peace on the Israel-Lebanon border. A diplomatic settlement is necessary.”

Despite evacuation warnings, many residents chose to remain in Tyre, with an estimated 15,000 people still in the city, down from a pre-war population of around 100,000. Local officials have reported that thousands of displaced individuals from surrounding areas have sought refuge in Tyre.

As the conflict continues, the humanitarian impact remains severe, with over 2,500 fatalities reported in Lebanese attacks since October last year and more than a million people displaced since September.
