The highly anticipated sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, is experiencing significant box office struggles following a disappointing opening weekend. The film, a follow-up to the 2019 hit Joker, earned just $38 million in its first weekend in U.S. theaters—well below early projections of $50-70 million.
In its second week, Joker: Folie à Deux saw an even steeper decline, grossing only $7 million across 4,102 theaters, marking an 81% drop. This sharp fall sets a new record for the steepest second-week decline for a comic book movie, surpassing the previous record held by The Marvels, which dropped 78% last year. The drastic fall has also placed Joker: Folie à Deux among the top 20 biggest second-weekend drops in box office history, according to data from Box Office Mojo.
Globally, the film has earned $165 million to date, still short of its $200 million production budget. In contrast, the original Joker film, made with a much smaller budget, opened with $96.2 million in the U.S. and grossed $248.4 million worldwide in just its first weekend. Ultimately, Joker went on to surpass $1 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film until it was dethroned this year by Deadpool & Wolverine.
While Joker was both a critical and commercial success, winning two Academy Awards and receiving 11 nominations, Joker: Folie à Deux has not fared as well. Critics have largely dismissed the sequel, which is a musical, as "boring" and "dull." Although some reviewers, including those from The Guardian and The Observer, praised Lady Gaga’s performance as Harley Quinn’s alter ego Lee Quinzel, they found the overall film "laborious" and "self-indulgent."
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, reprising his role as Arthur Fleck (the Joker), alongside Lady Gaga, who plays his love interest. However, despite the star-studded cast, Joker: Folie à Deux has yet to capture the same magic that made the original film a box office sensation.
