King Charles Backs UK PM in Ruling Out Reparations, Urges Focus on Present Inequalities

King Charles III has aligned with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in declining calls for reparations over the historical slave trade, stating that “none of us can change the past,” but emphasizing a commitment to addressing ongoing inequalities. Speaking with leaders at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, the King acknowledged the need to confront painful chapters of history while urging a forward-looking approach focused on education, employment, health, and climate action.

In his inaugural address as the head of the Commonwealth following Queen Elizabeth’s passing, Charles expressed deep pride in joining this “Family of Nations.” He highlighted the importance of addressing current global challenges with a unified voice, saying, “As we look around the world and consider its many deeply concerning challenges, let us choose… the language of community and respect, and reject the language of division.”

King Charles, who has prioritized environmental and social issues, encouraged Commonwealth nations to recognize past inequalities but emphasized that solutions for modern challenges lie in collective action rather than reparatory demands. He underscored that understanding history is essential to guide future choices, particularly where gaps in opportunity, education, and healthcare persist.
