Lagos State Government Partners with British Firm to Convert Plastic Waste to Energy

In a bid to combat plastic waste and promote sustainable practices, the Lagos State Government signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with a British company known for its expertise in converting plastic waste into energy. The agreement was finalized over the weekend at Alausa, Ikeja.

During the signing ceremony, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, explained that the LOI would facilitate access to the Abule Egba landfill for the collection of flexible plastic waste, which will be used for advanced chemical recycling. The project is a collaboration with GreenDeal Chemicals and Recycling and Greenback Recycling Technologies Ltd.

Wahab highlighted that this pilot initiative aims to transform flexible plastic waste collected at the Abule Egba landfill into energy. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) will provide waste deliveries that will serve as feedstock for the four chemical recycling modules to be installed at the site during the concession period.

The four modules are expected to process approximately 32 metric tonnes of flexible plastic waste per day, converting it into energy through chemical recycling. Initially, these modules will be capable of processing 11,680 metric tonnes of plastic waste annually, which will help prevent the emission of 75,920 kilograms of CO2 pollution. Additionally, the project is projected to create jobs and provide decent wages for about 1,100 waste pickers in the state.

Wahab also mentioned that if the pilot project proves successful, more modules will be deployed to increase the volume of processed plastic waste.

Dr. Akintayo Adisa, Chief Executive Officer of GreenDeal Chemicals and Recycling, expressed his company's commitment to reducing waste, increasing recycling efforts, and promoting sustainable practices in partnership with the Lagos State Government.

The signing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr. Omobolaji Gaji, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services; Engr. Mahamood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services; Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of LAWMA; Engineer Adefemi Afolabi, General Manager of the Lagos Waste Water Management Office; and various directors from the Ministry.
