Manchester United has officially parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a disappointing start to the season. The decision was communicated to ten Hag on Monday morning, October 28, by the club's senior executives, including chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox. Ten Hag's tenure at Old Trafford ends after two and a half years, with his final match resulting in a Premier League defeat to West Ham United on Sunday.
The defeat left Manchester United in a precarious 14th position in the league, seven points away from the Champions League qualification spots. The team has struggled this season, achieving only three wins out of nine league matches and a total of four victories in 14 competitions.
In the wake of ten Hag's departure, Manchester United has appointed former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the club in the offseason as part of ten Hag's staff, to serve as interim manager. The rest of the management team will remain in their current positions for the time being.
A statement released on Manchester United's social media confirmed the news, stating, “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Despite an end-of-season review in the summer that saw ten Hag retained after an eighth-place finish in the Premier League— the club's lowest position since 1990— the management decided to make a change following the disappointing results this season. In July, the club had triggered a one-year extension option in ten Hag's contract, which was originally set to expire in 2025.
