Gerard Depardieu Seeks Delay in Sexual Assault Trial Due to Health Issues

French actor Gerard Depardieu has requested a postponement of his sexual assault trial, originally scheduled for today in Paris, citing health reasons. His lawyer, Jeremie Assous, revealed that Depardieu's medical condition has prevented him from attending the hearing, prompting the request for a later date when he can fully participate.

"Depardieu is extremely affected, and unfortunately, his doctors have advised him against being present at the hearing. He will therefore seek a postponement to allow for his attendance," Assous stated in an interview with Franceinfo.

The 75-year-old actor faces serious allegations involving the sexual assault of two women on the set of the film Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters) in 2021. Prosecutors claim that Depardieu used "violence, coercion, surprise, or threat" during these incidents. According to court documents, the alleged victims reported that he trapped them between his legs and groped various parts of their bodies over their clothing.

In one case, a victim recounted that she experienced inappropriate remarks from Depardieu before a subsequent assault occurred. She described how he allegedly grabbed her as she passed by, blocking her with his legs and making lewd comments while touching her waist, hips, and chest. This incident reportedly took place in front of three witnesses, who confirmed her attempts to escape his grip and noted her shocked reaction. Following the encounter, a psychiatrist recommended a week off for her mental health.

After the alleged assault, there was an attempt for Depardieu to apologize; however, the victim later stated in a television interview that he was angry and blamed her for the incident. Witnesses corroborated that what Depardieu expressed did not qualify as a genuine apology.

Another woman from the film set also accused Depardieu of inappropriate behavior, claiming he had touched her buttocks multiple times despite her objections. This individual also received a six-day medical leave due to the psychological impact of the incidents.

In light of these allegations, Assous maintains that the evidence and witnesses presented in court will demonstrate that Depardieu is the target of false accusations. The trial highlights the ongoing societal reckoning with sexual violence in France, particularly in the entertainment industry, following the broader #MeToo movement.
