In a powerful speech delivered in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Michelle Obama issued a bold endorsement for Kamala Harris while sharply criticizing former President Donald Trump. The former First Lady described Trump as having “gross incompetence” and an “amoral character,” urging Americans to consider Harris’s qualifications and calling her “ready” to lead.
“Kamala has demonstrated that she’s ready for this role,” Obama told the attentive crowd. “The question now is, are we, as a nation, ready to take this step?” With the presidential race running neck and neck, Obama’s visit to Michigan highlighted the importance of the Midwestern state. She encouraged those present to follow her example by stepping up for Harris in what she referred to as a critical moment for the country.
Throughout her speech, Obama emphasized that Harris should not face a “higher standard” than Trump, who, she argued, failed in key moments such as the COVID-19 response and attempts to retain power following his 2020 loss. The former First Lady referenced public warnings from Trump’s former advisors about his unsuitability to return to office.
“I hope you’ll understand my frustration when we see Trump’s errors dismissed while Kamala is expected to excel in every instance,” she remarked, drawing a passionate “Preach!” from the audience.
During the Kalamazoo rally, which Obama playfully dubbed “Kamala-zoo,” she argued that voters should support Harris not because she is a woman but because she exemplifies the qualities of a “grown-up.” When Obama concluded her speech, Harris joined her on stage to BeyoncĂ©’s “Freedom,” met by a cheering, mostly female crowd.
Harris took the opportunity to assure the audience of her commitment to listening to the American people, contrasting herself with her opponent, who, she quipped, “seems too preoccupied with his own image.”
Imagining the Oval Office under her leadership, Harris told the audience, “In three months, it could be me, working through my priorities for America, or it could be Trump, fixated on his enemies list.”
Earlier, Harris visited a local healthcare clinic in Portage, where she discussed abortion restrictions and highlighted reproductive rights as a cornerstone of her campaign. Contrasting herself with Trump, who has taken credit for overturning Roe v. Wade, Harris promised to protect what remains of abortion access in the United States.
In her Michigan address, Obama emphasized the gravity of the situation, discussing women’s health and reproductive rights in detail. She called on men to stand up for women’s health, pointing out the risks of government policies that “revoke essential care.” In an emotional appeal, she said, “If we don’t get this right, the women you care about could suffer as a consequence of your choices.”
As one of the Democratic Party’s most respected voices, Michelle Obama rallied the audience in Michigan to focus on the stakes. “There’s too much at risk if we choose wrong,” she warned.
The Harris campaign is placing strategic focus on Michigan, a battleground state, where Trump narrowly won in 2016 but Democrats reclaimed in 2020. On the Republican side, Trump addressed supporters in Novi, Michigan, standing alongside Bill Bazzi, the Muslim mayor of Dearborn Heights, in an attempt to draw support among Michigan’s Arab and Muslim communities amid concerns about the Biden administration’s response to conflicts in Gaza.
As both candidates intensified their efforts, Democrats continue to campaign in Detroit and suburbs, seeking to mobilize independents, female voters, and Republicans disillusioned by Trump’s policies.
