The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning regarding the illegal sale and distribution of an unregistered brand of condoms known as Foula Condoms in Nigeria. In a statement released on October 31, the agency emphasized that these condoms have not been registered for use in the country and are being sold with labels that are not in English.
The unregistered condoms were identified during a Risk-Based Post Marketing Surveillance study conducted by NAFDAC, which took place in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State. The agency's statement highlighted the potential dangers associated with the use of such products.
"Condoms are a proven effective barrier method that can be used for both the prevention of unintended pregnancy and protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)," the agency stated. They also noted that for condoms to be effective, proper usage is essential.
The illegal distribution and sale of unregistered condoms present significant risks, as the safety, quality, and efficacy of these products cannot be guaranteed. NAFDAC warned that purchasing and using substandard condoms could undermine efforts to promote safe sex and prevent unintended pregnancies and STIs. The agency cautioned that defective condoms could leak or break, rendering them ineffective in providing the necessary protection.
NAFDAC urged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of the sale or distribution of unregistered products to the appropriate authorities.
