Navalnaya Envisions a Russia Beyond Putin at London Event

Yulia Navalnaya, widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, expressed her vision of a future Russia without President Vladimir Putin during a recent appearance at the Southbank Centre's London Literature Festival. At the event marking the launch of Navalny's memoir, Patriot, she emphasized that while change in Russia might take time, it could also happen unexpectedly, “like everything happens in Russia.”

Navalnaya shared her commitment to continuing her husband’s legacy and underscored that if she didn’t believe in the possibility of an alternative to Putin, she wouldn’t be able to carry on his work with the Anti-Corruption Foundation. She urged attendees to take small actions daily to challenge the current regime and help guide Russia towards a “normal, democratic” future. Simple gestures, such as posting on social media or engaging in discussions with colleagues, can make a significant impact, she noted.

Navalny began writing his memoir while recovering in Germany from a poisoning incident attributed to Russian security services in 2020. Navalnaya recounted how her husband was resolute in his decision to remain close to the Russian people, viewing exile as “unacceptable.” In January 2021, he returned to Russia, where he was promptly arrested at the airport. He spent the last 37 months of his life imprisoned, ultimately dying in an Arctic penal colony on February 16.

When asked if Navalny ever regretted returning to Russia, Navalnaya stated that he never voiced such feelings, maintaining his optimism and strength even in the days leading up to his death. She recalled that he had been laughing in court just before his passing.

Navalny had been approached multiple times to write a book but had initially declined, believing he would have a long life ahead of him. However, after the poisoning incident, he felt compelled to document his experiences.

During her moving speech, Navalnaya received a standing ovation. She later revealed her aspiration to one day run for the presidency of Russia, though she acknowledged the risks involved in returning while Putin remains in power.

Reflecting on her personal loss, Navalnaya expressed that she misses “everything” about her husband, especially their conversations and his advice. “He was the closest person in my life,” she said, highlighting the irreplaceable bond they shared.
