The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Sunday to Tuesday. In its report released on Saturday, NiMet highlighted expected weather conditions in different regions, including northern, central, and southern parts of Nigeria.
For Sunday, NiMet forecasts morning thunderstorms in the northern region, particularly in Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba. Later in the day, moderate rains are expected to extend to Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Yobe, and other northern states.
The North Central region can also expect thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in the morning, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Benue. The afternoon and evening will bring more thunderstorms and rains to these areas.
In the Southern region, light morning rains are expected in states like Oyo, Imo, Enugu, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, and Lagos, with thunderstorms and moderate rains predicted later in the day.
On Monday, thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected in the morning over parts of Taraba, Gombe, Kaduna, and Adamawa. By afternoon and evening, these conditions will spread to Borno, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Yobe.
In North Central, light morning rains are anticipated in Benue, Kogi, and Niger, while thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected in the FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Plateau later in the day.
In the South, states like Enugu, Imo, Delta, Cross River, and Rivers should prepare for morning rains, with thunderstorms and heavier rains expected by afternoon and evening.
For Tuesday, partly cloudy skies are predicted in the North during the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rains expected by afternoon over Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, and Gombe.
The North Central region will experience morning rains in Kogi, Kwara, and Niger, while thunderstorms will occur in the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, and Plateau later in the day.
In the Southern region, light morning rains are forecast for states such as Edo, Oyo, and Rivers, with moderate thunderstorms expected in Lagos, Imo, and Delta later in the day.
NiMet also warned of potential urban flooding in major cities due to heavy downpours. It urged residents to avoid flood-prone areas and for the public to follow safety guidelines. Strong winds may precede the rains, so precautions should be taken. The agency also advised airline operators and the public to stay updated with weather forecasts via NiMet's official website for effective planning.
