The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the federal government to reverse the recent fuel price increase implemented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). In a statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the union accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of mishandling fuel pricing, worsening the financial situation for ordinary Nigerians.
Ajaero expressed disappointment over the recurring fuel price hikes, pointing out that they have not brought any positive outcomes for the country. “We are deeply concerned by the latest rise in petrol prices,” Ajaero said. “It seems this government’s main approach is to continuously increase fuel prices without considering how Nigerians will cope, or offering meaningful relief.”
The NLC also criticized NNPCL's involvement in setting fuel prices, claiming it operates as a monopoly. “Even under the premise of market forces, it is concerning that a private company like NNPCL has such control over pricing, positioning itself as a dominant force. The government must revisit its approach and develop a clear plan for inclusive economic growth rather than relying on erratic policies and temporary reliefs,” Ajaero stated.
The union warned that the latest price increase has worsened poverty, crippled production, and led to further job losses across the country. Ajaero urged the government to reverse the price hike, arguing that previous increases have only deepened poverty without benefiting the economy.
In his closing remarks, Ajaero called on the government to be transparent about its long-term vision for the country. “The government should be honest with Nigerians about the direction it intends to take the nation,” he concluded.
