In a heartbreaking incident in Derby, Kansas, a photographer lost her life after accidentally stepping into the path of a spinning airplane propeller while on assignment. Amanda Gallagher, 37, was capturing images of skydivers boarding and disembarking from planes when the tragic accident occurred on Saturday, less than 15 miles from Wichita.
Reports indicate that Gallagher, while trying to frame her shots, inadvertently moved into the vicinity of a stationary aircraft that was still running. Emergency responders rushed her to a local hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
The Air Capital Drop Zone, the skydiving center operating the plane involved in the incident, released a statement indicating that Gallagher had breached "basic safety procedures." The statement noted that, for reasons yet to be determined, she stepped in front of the aircraft's wing while aiming her camera upward to capture the skydiving activity.
In the wake of her death, a GoFundMe campaign was established by a user identifying herself as Gallagher’s sister-in-law to raise funds for funeral expenses. The initiative has garnered over $15,000 in contributions. A message on the fundraising page commemorated Gallagher as "kind, adventurous, creative, and beautiful inside and out." It highlighted her roles as a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, expressing that she would be deeply missed.
The message also reflected on her passion, stating that Gallagher died “doing what she loved, skydiving and taking pictures.”
Authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Gallagher's tragic death.
