A British mother of two, Carrie, 36, from Slough, is recovering after a life-threatening experience following a failed liposuction procedure in Turkey. In 2022, Carrie decided to undergo the surgery, costing £4,500, after feeling unhappy with the changes to her body post-pregnancy. However, just minutes after waking from the six-hour operation at an Istanbul clinic, she realized something had gone horribly wrong.
Carrie's abdomen had turned black due to necrotising fasciitis, commonly known as "flesh-eating disease," which she contracted during the surgery. Within days, she collapsed in severe pain and was admitted to intensive care, where doctors discovered that she had developed sepsis, causing her organs to start shutting down.
"It was a really tight feeling to the point I felt like my body was going to split in two," Carrie recalled. Doctors attempted to wash out the infection immediately after the surgery, but within 24 hours, she collapsed in her bathroom and had to be rushed back to the hospital for emergency treatment.
"I went back to hospital and they said I had sepsis and needed emergency surgery," she explained. Ultimately, she underwent five surgeries over 12 days to remove the dead tissue in a desperate attempt to save her life.
Reflecting on her "hellish" ordeal, Carrie now warns others against seeking surgical procedures abroad, urging them to consider safer options within the UK. "I struggled with my stomach since having children. I wanted to get rid of the pouch and stretch marks," she said, explaining that she was motivated to use her inheritance money from her grandmother to achieve this goal.
Despite conducting thorough research and believing she had chosen a reputable clinic, Carrie deeply regrets her decision. "If I could turn back time, I would never have got it," she admitted. The ordeal continues to impact her mental health, leaving her feeling deformed and self-conscious about her appearance.
"I try to stay positive and think that I'm lucky to be alive and see my kids grow up," she concluded, urging others to embrace diet and exercise as alternatives to surgical procedures.
