PHOTOS: Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar Reportedly Killed by Israeli Forces in Gaza Strike

Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader and mastermind behind the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, was reportedly killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during a strike in Gaza, according to Israeli officials. Photos claiming to show Sinwar's body were circulated on social media, though formal confirmation is still pending.

Sinwar, who had led Hamas operations in Gaza since 2017, was believed to be the key figure behind the attack that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated, “We will reach every terrorist — and eliminate him,” as Sinwar's body was taken for DNA testing to verify the identity. A senior Israeli official, speaking anonymously, said it is “likely” that Sinwar was killed, but authorities are still awaiting full confirmation.

During the operation, IDF soldiers engaged in a firefight with Hamas fighters, and Sinwar was discovered alongside other senior Hamas commanders in the building. It remains unclear whether Sinwar was living in the location or passing through from elsewhere in Gaza.

Israel has intensified its strikes against Hamas and other Iran-backed militant groups, following similar operations that eliminated key figures such as Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July and Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut in September.
