Suicide Bombing in Mogadishu Cafe Claims Seven Lives

A tragic suicide bombing occurred on Thursday outside a cafe near a police training school in Mogadishu, Somalia, resulting in the deaths of seven people and injuring six others. The victims included both police officers and civilians who were enjoying tea at the General Kaahiye Police Academy when the attack took place.

According to police reports, the explosion happened beneath trees where locals often gather to relax. “The cafe was full of people enjoying their tea, and then everything was chaos,” said Mohamed Ali, a resident who witnessed the incident.

The armed group Al-Shabab, linked to al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for the attack. This group regularly targets military and governmental institutions in its campaign to overthrow Somalia's current government, which has been engaged in a sustained offensive against them.

Witnesses reported that rescuers quickly arrived on the scene to assist the injured. A paramedic at Madina Hospital stated that many victims were receiving treatment for severe injuries. “We are working to rehabilitate the wounded,” she said.

This attack comes just weeks after a deadly incident in August, where more than 30 people were killed during an assault on a public beach in Mogadishu, sparking protests against Al-Shabab.

To maintain stability, the Somali government has heavily relied on foreign military support and has formed alliances with local armed groups to combat Al-Shabab. This effort is further backed by the African Union force and U.S. airstrikes.

As the African Transition Mission in Somalia prepares to conclude its deployment in December, Somalia is taking steps to assume full responsibility for its security.
