Thomas Tuchel Appointed as England Manager on 18-Month Deal

Thomas Tuchel, the 51-year-old German coach, has been appointed as the new manager of the England men's national football team, signing an 18-month contract. He becomes only the third non-British permanent manager of the team, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel's appointment comes after Gareth Southgate resigned in July, following England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. During the interim period, Lee Carsley, who took over in August, has been managing the team and will continue to do so for the upcoming Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month.

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Tuchel stated, "I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have always felt a personal connection to football in this country, and it has already given me some incredible moments. The chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and I am thrilled to work with this talented group of players."

Mark Bullingham, Chief Executive of the Football Association (FA), praised Tuchel's appointment, stating that the FA had hired "one of the best coaches in the world." He added, "Thomas and the team are focused on giving us the best possible chance of winning the 2026 World Cup."

England, who have not won a major international trophy since their 1966 World Cup triumph, will begin their qualification campaign for the 2026 tournament—hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States—next year.

Tuchel brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously managed clubs like Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. He led Chelsea to a Champions League victory, four cup finals, and also secured domestic titles with Dortmund, PSG, and Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title in 2023.
