A recent poll conducted by the United Auto Workers (UAW) has revealed that union members in critical battleground states support Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump by a significant margin of 22 points. This survey highlights the shifting dynamics among union voters as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
In Michigan, the heart of the U.S. auto industry, support for Harris stands at 54%, compared to Trump's 34%, giving her a 20-point advantage. This aligns with the UAW's assertion in 2020 that its members contributed to 84% of Joe Biden's winning margin in Michigan.
The poll also uncovered an interesting trend among non-college-educated men, a demographic where Harris has previously faced challenges. In this group, Harris leads Trump by 14 points, indicating potential inroads into a crucial voter segment.
Both candidates have actively sought the support of UAW members. UAW President Shawn Fain has publicly endorsed Harris, making him a target for Trump's criticism. President Biden made headlines last year when he walked the picket line during the UAW strike against major auto manufacturers, a historic first for a sitting president. The union is also mobilizing its members through door-to-door campaigns in key states to bolster Harris's voter turnout.
The UAW's outreach efforts appear effective, as members who were contacted by the union regarding the election reported a 29-point increase in support for Harris over Trump. "When members hear directly from other members about what’s at stake and which candidate will have their backs, we’re able to break through," Fain explained. He emphasized the importance of discussing issues that resonate with union members, such as their pay, families, and future.
In the coming week, Fain plans to connect with members via a live stream and participate in voter turnout events alongside prominent Harris supporters, including Senator Bernie Sanders in Michigan and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Pennsylvania.
While most labor unions have shown support for Harris, the Teamsters International made headlines in September 2024 by opting not to endorse any candidate, citing that a significant portion of their membership favors Trump. This division within labor circles illustrates the competitive landscape both candidates must navigate as they seek to secure the vital working-class vote.
